What does “unusual” actually mean?
Ten years ago matcha ice cream was one of the most unusual ice cream flavours around. Today you'll find it in every other ice cream parlour. So “unusual” isn't a fixed state – it keeps shifting. What counts is the feeling with the first spoonful: hang on, I've never tasted anything like this.
Three things make a flavour really special: an unusual taste (sweet-salty, umami, floral), a visual wow moment (colour, layers, topping) – and ideally a little story behind it that you can tell at the table.
Crazy ice cream flavours in six families
If you sort the most exciting flavours of recent years, six clear families emerge. They make it easier to find out which direction appeals to you.
| Family | Principle | Our example |
|---|---|---|
| Sweet + salty | Salt lifts the sweetness instead of covering it | Umami ice cream |
| Savoury | Vegetables and spices instead of fruit | Avocado sorbet with chilli |
| Floral | Flowers and herbs as the main flavour | Peach Rose |
| Boozy | A drink turned into dessert | Pink Aperol, beer ice cream |
| Texture | The crunch carries the flavour | Honeycomb Candy, Sticky Coco |
| Looks | Colour and layers as the event | Unicorn Breakdown, 24 Karat |
If you're not sure, start with the texture family: something crunchy in something creamy almost always works, even for people who usually stick to vanilla.
14 unusual ice cream flavours in detail
The order goes from “OK, I'll dare that” to “how crazy are you lot, exactly?”. Spoiler: all 14 taste surprisingly good.
01Avocado sorbet with nachos & chilli
Creamy + salty + spicy
Creamy avocado sorbet, crunchy nachos, a hint of red chilli sauce. Sounds like a summer snack, tastes like a secret. Avocado lovers among us: this is your dessert.
02Unicorn Breakdown
Loud to look at, balanced to taste
What happens when a unicorn loses its balance? Mango, blueberry, coconut and raspberry sorbet in four layers, topped with popping candy. Our natural alternative to blue Smurf ice cream – made from real fruit instead of colouring.
03Umami ice cream
Miso, sesame, chilli, crunch
Japanese flavours in a scoop. Creamy ice cream with a miso base, drizzled with black sesame caramel sauce, a hint of chilli and crunchy rice crackers. Sweet, salty, savoury, crunchy – all at once.
0424 Karat (gold ice cream)
Caramelised gold chocolate + real gold leaf
The golden colour doesn't come from vanilla but from caramelising the chocolate. Served with caramel gold sauce and real gold leaf. Available every now and then at our shops – and no, a scoop doesn't cost 24k.
05Pink Aperol
Summer sorbet with a kick
Real Aperol Spritz meets grapefruit mousse. The alcohol is well diluted, but the kick stays. Perfect for summer evenings – or, let's be honest, relaxed mornings too. Grown-ups only.
06Matcha MiSu
Tiramisu, but with matcha instead of espresso
Inspired by Italian tiramisu – except that instead of coffee we use high-quality Fuku matcha. Layered with creamy, mild mascarpone ice cream and crunchy ladyfingers. If you like matcha, stop scrolling right here.
07Baklava
Creamy pistachio meets a Turkish classic
Turkish baklava meets one of our most popular ice creams: pistachio. Filo pastry, nuts, honey, sugar syrup – the dessert classic that probably originated in Syria or Armenia and spread from there across half the Mediterranean.
08Sticky Coco
Sticky rice in ice cream – surprisingly filling
Inspired by Thai mango sticky rice. Vegan coconut ice cream (made with coconut milk instead of cow's milk – hence the intense flavour), stirred with sticky rice, plus raspberry coulis and mango sauce. The rice makes it pretty filling, by the way.
09Banana Peanut Curry
Creamy banana ice cream + curry + peanuts
Sweet banana, a pinch of curry, crunchy peanuts. A tropical holiday for your taste buds – and if you think that's too much: a flavour so hot even the ice cream can hardly believe it.
10Beer ice cream
Dark beer, honey mustard caramel, pretzel
Dark beer as a creamy dairy ice cream, with honey mustard caramel and pretzel pieces – bitter meets sweet meets salty. Bavaria supposedly has liver sausage ice cream – we'll stick to beer. Goes better with a bratwurst than you'd think.
11Pomegranate rosemary
Sweet fruit + bitter herb
Reminds us of our favourite lemonade: pomegranate rosemary. Ripe pomegranates meet the spicy, herby taste of rosemary. We might know it as a lemonade – as an ice cream it's still a little eye-catcher on the dessert menu.
12Peach Rose
Peach + real rose petals
The idea came to us on a walk through a rose garden. Peach mousse, rose water, real rose petals – capturing the atmosphere of a warm summer night. Floral, gentle, romantic. And vegan.
13Honeycomb Candy
Airy caramel on Bourbon vanilla
Honeycomb candy is an airy, sweet kind of caramel that's a banger internationally and still an insider tip in Germany. We put it on our best vanilla ice cream, made with real Bourbon vanilla pods. Creamy meets airy-crunchy.
14Rainbow
Colourful fruit sorbets, layer by layer
A cup full of joie de vivre – as colourful as Berlin itself. Every spoonful is a trip through the fruit sorbet universe. Who can resist a rainbow, especially an edible one?
Where you can try them
You'll find all 14 unusual ice cream flavours every now and then in our two Berlin ice cream shops – at Hackescher Markt and at Ku'damm 27. Which ones are in the counter changes daily; the more unusual creations are often limited editions that we rotate seasonally or on a whim.
For events, weddings or company parties we put the flavours together for you, too: we come by with our ice cream catering and bring exactly the mix that suits the occasion – including vegan flavours, so nobody's left out.
All flavours from A to Z – classics included – are in our list of ice cream flavours. If you like it without milk, you'll find our creamy vegan creations under vegan ice cream. And why does umami ice cream work? The name says it all: umami is the fifth basic taste alongside sweet, sour, salty and bitter.
There are far crazier flavours out there in the world – in Bavaria there's supposedly even liver sausage ice cream. We'll keep our hands off that one. These 14 are enough for us.
