Today we're diving into the fascinating history and timeless appeal of chocolate ice cream. And to make choosing between the different versions a little easier in future, we're introducing our top ten chocolate ice creams at Katchi. Let's go!

What actually is chocolate ice cream?
Chocolate ice cream is a classic flavour, traditionally made in the ice cream machine from milk or cream and getting its characteristic taste from cocoa powder or chocolate. Today there are also lots of vegan chocolate ice creams based on plant-based milk alternatives, so more people can enjoy it. Icing sugar, egg, egg yolk or colourings don't go into the machine in our recipe, though.
The fascination of chocolate ice cream
This ice cream holds a fascination that goes far beyond its sweet taste. It's a symbol of pleasure and comfort, a familiar companion on sunny days and a pick-me-up when you're feeling low. The magic of a scoop lies not just in its melting texture and delicate aroma, but in the emotional bond it can create.
Its tempting taste is timeless and universally appealing. The deep notes of cocoa blend harmoniously with the creamy texture and create a taste experience that delights the senses. It's this unique combination of sweetness and bitterness that makes it such an unforgettable treat.
A piece of childhood
But the fascination goes beyond taste. Psychologists have studied the emotional connections people have with certain flavours. Chocolate in ice cream doesn't just make us happy – it can bring back nostalgic memories, too. Many people link its taste with childhood memories, cosy moments with family and friends, or romantic dates.
It also has a cultural meaning that reaches far beyond borders. It's one of the most popular flavours worldwide and can be found in all kinds of versions in almost every ice cream parlour and on every dessert menu. From traditional Italian gelaterie to modern ice cream parlours, chocolate ice cream has a strong presence and remains the undisputed choice for lovers of sweet treats.
A journey through history

Origins and development of chocolate ice cream
The origins of chocolate ice cream go back a long way, to when versions of dairy ice cream were first enriched with cocoa powder or melted chocolate to create a new flavour. These early attempts mark the beginning of a development towards one of the most popular and distinctive flavours in the world.
In the 17th century chocolate ice cream, known as "chocolat glacé", became popular in France. At first it was a luxury dessert reserved mainly for noble families before it gradually reached wider society. Innovations in ice cream making and its spread in parlours and patisseries helped make it popular beyond France.
Historical milestones and what made it popular
In the 19th century, especially during the industrial revolution, ice cream went through a mass-production revolution. New technologies made ice cream making more efficient and brought it to the masses. Chocolate ice cream became a tempting yet established treat for people from all walks of life.
The 20th century brought further innovations in ice cream technology that pushed its variety and quality even further. Advances in food technology, better ways to transport ingredients and the global economy all helped establish it as a favourite flavour in many parts of the world.

How chocolate ice cream developed alongside ice cream making
The ways chocolate ice cream is made have developed and been refined a lot over time. From the artisan techniques of the past to today's state-of-the-art production, the art of turning chocolate into ice cream has changed considerably. The choice of high-quality ingredients, from fine cocoa varieties to premium chocolate, has produced a rich variety of flavours and textures that are available today.

Chocolate ice cream – but which one?
There are thousands of recipes, creations and photos doing the rounds online. But which one is the best? At Katchi we try to create a flavour for every chocolate ice cream lover. Should the recipe include a bit of fruit, a few nuts or white chocolate as well as milk or cream? Why not! We have by far the most unusual flavours in our counter. Don't believe us? Then let us introduce our ten chocolate ice creams and ask you again. Who knows – maybe one of your new favourites is hiding here.
Dark chocolate – the classic
We start with one of our most classic flavours: dark chocolate. As the name suggests, this one uses dark chocolate. Our ice cream is made from the finest Belgian chocolate, known for its deep, intense cocoa content. It's especially popular paired with its counterpart, vanilla – two perfect portions of cool pleasure in one.
And don't worry: kids love this one too, because instead of a bitter note it wins you over with creamy, intense chocolatiness. Young and old keep coming back for it.

Chocolate sorbet
If you were already sad about missing out on that because you want or need to avoid dairy, you can breathe a sigh of relief. Our chocolate sorbet combines Belgian chocolate with a homemade plant-based milk alternative. That way it still gets its creaminess in the ice cream machine, and the flavour with the highest cocoa content really cleans up as an ice cream. As a vegan option it contains no egg, butter or cow's milk at all.
Milk chocolate Twix
Milk chocolate, along with Swiss chocolate, is one of the most popular chocolates in the world. Once our ice cream base comes fresh out of the machine, we add some shortbread and a caramel swirl to loosen up the texture and give it a lovely finish – inspired by a popular sweet: Twix. At Katchi this flavour is put together with lots of love after churning, so the result is convincing not just to look at but in taste, too.

White chocolate raspberry
We couldn't leave out one of our white chocolate creations – here's one of the favourites. Our white chocolate ice cream with raspberry coulis is a refreshing creation that combines a light chocolate base with fruity accents – tempting, and not just on sunny days. Although some say white chocolate isn't "real" chocolate because it's made from cocoa butter and sugar and, unlike dark or milk chocolate, contains no cocoa solids, this delicate treat seduces the palate and melts on the tongue, which makes it irresistible.
Willy Wonka Chocolate Bomb
Chocoholics, listen up! Our Willy Wonka Chocolate Bomb more than lives up to its name. Chocolate sorbet combined with brownie pieces and peanut butter makes hearts beat faster. The secret recipe doesn't just enchant the vegan crowd – its taste wins over every chocolate lover. Luckily you don't need a golden ticket to enjoy the rich taste of our vegan Willy Wonka Chocolate Bomb. And relax: no Oompa Loompas were involved in making this ice cream.

White chocolate hazelnut
This flavour is very popular with nut fans. The creamy, smooth white chocolate really comes into its own next to the dreamy hazelnuts. The combination of the two makes hearts beat faster.
Milk chocolate almond crunch
Milk chocolate with crunchy caramelised almonds – this one rounds off our flavour list and is a hit in every season. Come by and try it yourself! Can't get enough of different flavours? Then check out our ultimate list of ice cream flavours.
24 Karat
We're especially proud of this recipe. With our gourmet creation 24 Karat you can treat yourself to a little luxury every day. The ice cream is made from the finest Belgian gold chocolate and has a creamy, caramelised white chocolate base. It's decorated with salted caramel pearls and offers a wonderful contrast of sweet and salty that will seduce your taste buds. And that's not all. Our 24 Karat ice cream is sprinkled with pure golden chocolate pieces, added using a delicate stracciatella technique, so every bite really does taste luxurious.

White chocolate lime
Our White Chocolate Lime is a subtle fusion of white chocolate and refreshing lime that offers an incomparable sensory experience. This delicate ice cream combines velvety sweet white chocolate with the refreshing tang of fresh lime in a harmonious symphony of flavour.
The white chocolate melts gently on the tongue and leaves a soft, creamy texture, while the fresh lime adds a lively, fruity contrast. This tasty duo comes together in a treat that will delight chocolate lovers as well as anyone looking for a refreshing taste experience.
Milk chocolate white almond
Can't decide between milk chocolate, white chocolate and nuts? No problem! That's why we're proud to offer our Milk Chocolate White Almond ice cream. Almonds coated in white chocolate combined with milk chocolate are an irresistible duo you won't find anywhere else.

How chocolate ice cream tastes best
To enjoy the full aroma and texture, it's best to savour it slowly. Take your time to feel the creamy texture on your tongue and explore the different flavour notes.
A hit in a sundae, too
Chocolate ice cream offers lots of creative ways to serve it or combine it with other ingredients. If you're eating it at home, try topping it with fresh berries or chopped nuts to add texture and flavour. Another delicious idea is to serve chocolate ice cream between warm brownies to enjoy the contrast of warm and cold.
Our favourite way to serve chocolate ice cream is, of course, in a sundae. Here you can choose whether it becomes a delicious chocolate sundae or whether you'd rather enjoy it with a sorbet or vanilla ice cream. If you want to know which sundaes are the most popular today, click HERE.
The versatility of chocolate ice cream lets your creativity run free and enjoy it in all kinds of combinations that satisfy both your sweet tooth and your appetite for interesting flavour pairings.
Our conclusion – chocolate always works
We think chocolate ice cream deserves its number one spot in Germany. Its versatile taste delights every generation and shows how creatively it can be changed or topped. Nuts, fruit or chocolate chunks – there's something for everyone. And it doesn't always need eggs, milk or cream. The ingredients are as individual and adaptable as the flavours that come out of the machine.
